| Suspended bridge |
From the
hotel, head towards Lima, turn left, in the
direction of Pistoia, 500 m turn right, after 2 km,
you turn left for Piteglio, directly after the fork
turn right and go towards the suspended bridge. “Il
Ponte Sospeso” built for trading purposes with a
redundant custom’s office at the bottom.
The
suspended bridge lies over the Lima stream
inaugurated in 1922; 220 m long and 40 m above
ground level, actually is one of the longest
suspended bridges in the world and completely safe
to cross. Today the bridge is a tourist destination;
people from all over come see its magnificence.

| Ponte di Castruccio |
Maintaining
the same route for Piteglio, you will find a fork
for “Lolle” and “Ponte di Castruccio”. The road
goes down towards the Lima stream between the forest
and the prairie, and the end of the street a path
will take you to the Castruccio Bridge.
The bridge
erected between the years (1281 – 1328) above the
Lima River.

with a façade of round arches built with river
pebbles and erratic stone brickwork in
sub-horizontal layers, used mainly for trading
purposes between the two towns of Lucca and Pistoia,
and at the bottom of the bridge there were two
customs offices now redundant, which would control
the traffic of merchandise from one town to the

| Pieve di Piteglio |
Piteglio, The
small village consists of two significant
cathedrals: the Pieve della Santissima Annunziata,
and the church of Santa Maria Assunta.
The
cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, founded most
probably during the 13th century built on
the highest point of the town with its bell tower
also used as a watchtower, inside with its two
chapels of a late renaissance period. The left
chapel donated to “Madonna del Latte”, where
according to folklore arrived to Piteglio in the
suitcase of a crusader returning from “Terra Santa
La Pieve
della Santissima Annunziata, Matilde Canossa one of
the religious founders of the scrolls, documented in
1040. The isolated cathedral maintains its original
aspect and part of its architectonic rudiments.
Internally amongst the precious furnishings, you
have the ancient christening font, simple
cylindrical basin with a colour-clashing rim. |
