North of the Comune di Pescia is the high valley territory of the river Omonimo, held between the Pescia river and the Torbola torrent which has always been called Valleriana. Renamed "Svizzera Pesciatina" by Genevan J.C. Sismondi, historian and economist, exiled to Pescia at the end of the 18th century, for the reminder of the green slopes of his loved and distant Switzerland.
The area, between hills and mountain, has really a lot to offer to art and nature lovers. Among the woods of chestnut and oak, ten towns appear atop the knolls and crests, called “castella” all built with that serene rock for which, during Medieval times, the area was famous.
The long list includes Pietrabuona, Medicina, Fibbialla, Aramo, Sorana, San Quirico, Castelvecchio, Stiappa, Pontito and Vellano, to which Lignana, the eleventh castle, must be added, of which remain only a few ruins. All the city walls, pretty well conserved, offer picturesque glimpses open to the valley, and a very enchanting atmosphere.
From the Hotel the area is reachable by car going down to Lima in the direction of Pistoia after 2 kilometers, and intersection from the right takes you toward Pescia, once at Margine di Momignio you enter into the Valdinievole territory and you will see the first of the Medieval castle towns. A stay in Sorana is suggested, where a snack tasting of Fagiolo di Sorana, a DOP product of this area can be organized with the association Il Ghiareto. |
